01/01/2009 - JCC names official charity for 2009, paying tribute to former employee who died tragically in road crashes
The UK’s second largest independent collision repair chain has announced its official charity for 2009.
Just Car Clinics is delighted to be supporting road safety charity Brake, which runs national campaigns to encourage people to be more careful and considerate drivers.
It’s a cause that is close to the hearts of staff across the group, not only because they work in an industry which sees thousands of people adversely affected by road traffic accidents (RTAs) every year, but also because they tragically lost a colleague from JCC’s Wakefield branch last year.
Aimee Norman, who was a receptionist at the West Yorkshire-based branch, died in a serious collision only several months after giving birth. Now, staff at JCC want to do something worthwhile towards helping to reduce the number of people who die in RTAs every year. Brake supports the families of those involved in crashes and also run education and awareness campaigns. These include National Road Safety Week, their 2Young2Die campaign, educating young people, nationwide, about driving safely, and education programmes with parents and young children.
Barry Whittles, Chief Executive of JCC, said: “We feel that as a collision repair chain, we see the results of minor road crashes on a daily basis but perhaps don’t always consider those who are seriously affected by major road crashes.
“We hope that we can raise plenty of money over the next year for this worthwhile campaign. To help us achieve this, we are encouraging all of our staff to get involved. Staff from across the group will be encouraged to arrange their own fundraising events at branch level, meanwhile our head office will be spearheading group wide activities to raise money too.”
Brake runs campaigns including encouraging the government to introduce tougher driving tests to raise the standard of drivers and trying to increase the number of traffic police and enforcement measures to make our roads safer.
The charity also runs the Forgotten Victims campaign, campaigning for more government support for those bereaved and injured in road crashes. JCC staff are already planning to place collection boxes in every branch to encourage customers to make donations to the charity. In addition to this, they are planning fundraising events for staff, customers and suppliers next year which will include a charity golf day, a sponsored go-karting event and a charity football tournament.
Some staff are even planning a charity parachute jump. Katie Shephard, of Brake, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Just Car Clinic on board as one of our extremely valued corporate supporters.
“Eight people are killed every day on UK roads, devastating families nationwide. Brake is only able to continue our work supporting these families because of the generosity of others. The funds Just Car Clinics donate will ensure Brake can continue to provide invaluable support, such as our BrakeCare helpline, face to face volunteer support and literature for people who have been bereaved in road crashes.“We look forward to working with Just Car Clinics, both throughout 2009, and in future years.”
