23/09/2008 - JCC Shines at industry awards ceremony

Daniel Cain, who has worked at JCC’s Grimsby branch for almost five years, has beaten off stiff competition to earn the title Young Panel Technician of the Year. Meanwhile, the group also won the Training & Development award which recognises its commitment to developing the people we employ. 

Speaking following on from the awards ceremony, Daniel was delighted with his win and said his next ambition is to win at the 2009 WorldSkills competition in Canada next year. 

“I really enjoyed the awards ceremony and it's a good feeling to be recognised as the best panel technician in Britain - especially since I have been a finalist for the last three years and was a runner-up last year,” he said.

To win the award, Daniel, along with other semi-finalists, had to successfully complete an ATA online theory exam and a tough practical assessment of his skills by a panel of industry experts under very stressful conditions. However, only Daniel made the grade.  

He said: “There was an intense two day assessment for the award and I had to do everything from realigning vehicle panels and repairing a wing to an online theory test. I had already completed my ATA accreditation the year before though, so I felt well prepared for it.”   

Daniel’s victory is the only occasion in the eight year history of the Craft awards that there has been just one finalist and outright winner. He added: "I felt nice and relaxed on the night because I already knew I had won the award since I was the only finalist. I am looking forward to training ready for the first round of the WorldSkills competition in January now.” 

Winning the Bodyshop Training Award was a also a huge achievement and is the result of significant investments into the company’s Training & Support Centre, based in Goole, where Training and Development Manager David Hall has ensured all training initiatives undertaken have been successful. Judges from the awards panel spent an afternoon JCC’s head offices reviewing training and development procedures – they were particularly impressed by the implementation of JCC’s successful Culture Club initiative, as well as its commitment to technical training, which means the group now has the facilities to train technicians to ATA standards on its own premises under the supervision of Chris McGowan.   

JCC came up against competition from the likes of the Volkswagen and Solus national training centres, but directors were delighted to stand out head and shoulders above our competitors. 

Barry Whittles, JCC’s chief executive, said: “I am very proud of Daniel's achievement, he is a shining example of how our staff can develop within the group - it's a real honour to know that we have the country's best panel technician working with us and I hope that his colleagues will see this as an opportunity to work towards winning the award in the future. Well done to Daniel. I am also delighted that we won the Bodyshop Training Award - this is testament to our commitment to ensuring we are constantly training and mentoring the people we employ, it is a result of years of investment into the provision of excellent facilities and systems.”
